What is char cloth?
Char cloth is a natural fiber (such as cotton) that has been converted into a slow burning tinder. It can be ignited by a single spark with very low oxygen. To learn more about char cloth click here.
Making char cloth
You will need:
- A small tin box, like some Altoid mints come in, but bigger
- A piece of cloth, size depending on how much char cloth you want to make
- A small nail
- A hammer
- A fire that has already been started (see my post about how to start a fire)
Instructions
Start by making a small hole in the lid of the tin. Next, cut the cloth into small pieces, all of them about an inch in diameter. Fill the tin box with the small pieces of cloth. Close the lid and put the tin on red hot coals. Wait about 5 minutes and take the box off of the fire with a stick. If it is done, the cloth should be solid black and should not break very easily. If the char cloth is not done, put the box back on the coals for a few more minutes and then check it again.
